World Bank predicts Vietnam's 2020 GDP growth of 4.9%

Vietnam aims for a GDP growth rate of 5% this year, surpassing international expectations and focusing on a rapid recovery strategy to overcome the effects of the pandemic. Major international institutions have significantly lowered their growth forecasts for Vietnam this year. The World Bank predicts 4.9% growth, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) growth of only 2.7%. Vietnam's first quarter GDP growth dropped to 3.82% for the first time in 10 years.

Prime Minister Hooke reported that although growth was slowing, it was higher than other countries in Southeast Asia (ASEAN). In addition, the Vietnamese government announced that it will implement stimulus measures to quickly recover from corona.

Vietnam's economic growth rate will reach 6.6% in 2019, the World Bank forecasts on April 24 in its Managing Headwinds Report.

The economic growth rate was slightly weak due to financial tightening, slowing personal consumption, and weak external demand. In the medium term, the growth rate is expected to remain at around 6.5% due to the current virtuous upward trend. The labor market continues to be favorable, with poverty rates forecast to decline further.

Vietnam's economic growth rate for 2019 was 6.881 TP1T, exceeding the World Bank's forecast.

The World Bank calls on Vietnam to proactively and carefully manage in response to changes in the world economy

Growth rates in East Asia and other developing countries are forecast to fall from 6.3 percent in 2018 to 6.0 percent in 2019 and 2020.
