Vietnam's car sales increase, motorcycle sales decrease (1st quarter of 2019)
Vietnam saw a sharp increase in imported vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2019, resulting in an increase in overall vehicle sales while decreasing motorcycle sales. According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), vehicle sales in the first quarter increased 31% year-on-year to 78,252 units. 75% of them are passenger cars, up 48% year-on-year.

Import sales of finished vehicles jumped 2.3 times, while local production sales fell by 8%. According to the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM), total motorcycle sales including Honda, Piaggio, Suzuki, SYM and Yamaha fell 6.1% to 735,934 units. Honda has a 75% market share.

The number of cars sold was 27,197 units in April 2019, down 29% from the previous month, compared to 38,369 units sold in March. The most popular automobile brands in Vietnam are Toyota, the leading automobile manufacturers in Vietnam, Truong Hai Auto Corporation (Thaco), KIA, Mazda and Peugeot.
Sales of popular Toyota models also decreased
Toyota's unit sales decreased 54% to 4,188 units. The company's popular model, the Vios, sold only 1,115 units compared to 3,161 units in March. Industry officials report that Toyota Vios and Toyota Wigo compact cars have plummeted in the face of intensifying competition between relatively affordable Thaco and Hyundai. Together, five brands, including Honda, Piaggio, Suzuki, SYM and Yamaha, make up about 95 percent of the motorcycle market. Honda currently holds almost 77% of the market share, increasing its share by 4.5% since the end of June last year. On the other hand, the other four companies could not expand their market share.
Trends in motorcycle sales in Vietnam
2018 sales in Vietnam were the fourth largest motorcycle market in the world after India, China and Indonesia. Last year, Vietnam had the highest percentage of new motorcycle purchases, recording 35,000 per million.Last year, India sold 21.5 million new motorcycles, followed by China with 15.5 million, and Vietnam ranked fourth with 3.4 million.
