Vietnam esports, games, VNG commentary
Electronic sports, this is a word that is starting to get a lot of attention these days. In electronic sports, professional gamers become athletes, and gaming on officially competitive devices is recognized as a sport in the United States.
This e-sports is also attracting attention in Vietnam, a developing country. As the world is connected by the Internet, trends are being created in both developed and developing countries.
This time, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, director of development of VNG, Vietnam's first esports startup company, explained the future of esports in Vietnam.
VNG's thoughts Toward the spread of e-sports in Vietnam
As a game competition developer/producer in Vietnam, VNG, what do you think about the Vietnamese e-sports market?
Esports has become very popular in the US and EU, with major tournaments attracting millions of fans. Esports is still a new concept in Vietnam. With proper investment in esports, regions such as Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines can develop into countries that represent esports.
Esports is currently holding the Asian Games 2018 and the Southeast Asian Games 2019, and may be officially registered for the Olympics in the future. Esports will be recognized not only in Asia but also in the world, and will be able to develop like other sports.
What are the pros and cons of esports tournaments so far?
The eSports championship in Vietnam has attracted a lot of attention from gamers, sponsors and the media. VNG now has the facilities and infrastructure that meet international standards to host esports tournaments.
Esports is a new concept in Vietnam and there are still many questions and criticisms about this area. Whether gaming is truly accepted as a sport, the lack of management and venues for hosting esports tournaments.
What are the ways Vietnam needs to tap into the esports market?
First of all, if we get more attention from the media, the awareness of e-sports will improve a lot. To raise awareness of esports, Vietnam should host large-scale professional tournaments.
It is necessary to attract investors, build a “game house” (a training place for e-sports players), and provide a training environment approved by the Vietnamese government.
It is also necessary for esports to be recognized as an important industry, not just entertainment.
The Future of Esports Tournaments in Vietnam
What are your future plans for VNG tournaments in Vietnam?
As of now, the Vietnamese government has not provided any mechanism or law regarding professional esports tournaments, thus officially disallowing the holding of esports tournaments. The global e-sports industry is expected to surpass $1 billion by 2020. To take advantage of this growth potential, e-sports need to be recognized by the state. Countries should take responsibility for tournaments and create a reception for esports players.
VNG hopes to bring international esports tournaments to Vietnam and contribute to esports awareness and industry development.
